hair loss
Mild hair loss, or the fact that hair falls out, is normal at first. Hair goes through different phases and eventually falls out to make room for new hair to grow.
Pathological hair loss (alopecia) is when a person loses more than 100 hairs per day over a longer period of time. The causes of alopecia are very diverse, and treatment depends on what specifically led to hair loss in each individual case.
Causes:
- Hormonal reasons
- Certain medications
- illness
- Malnutrition
Different types of hair loss:
Hereditary hair loss: Mainly affects men. Those affected have hair roots that are genetically hypersensitive to male sex hormones (androgens).
Circular hair loss: The exact causes of circular hair loss (alopecia areata) are still unclear. In many cases, spontaneous healing occurs—the lost hair grows back, so that the bald spots disappear again. However, relapses are possible, meaning that the hair may fall out again. In other patients, spontaneous healing does not occur, and the bald spots remain permanently.
Diffuse hair loss: This is often temporary. Once the cause (iron deficiency, chemotherapy, poisoning, etc.) has been eliminated, the hair grows back. In diffuse alopecia, the hair roots are damaged. This leads to hair loss that is more or less evenly distributed across the entire head.
Mechanical hair loss: Usually normalizes again if the damaging stress on the hair roots (e.g., from tight ponytails or braids) is avoided.
