Are you feeling the spring fever yet?
Not everyone can enjoy spring. Do you know that feeling when your eyes itch and your nose runs constantly? In Switzerland, about 20% of the population suffers from hay fever. Pollen allergies are often hereditary. Typical symptoms include: sneezing fits, a runny nose, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, itchy and watery eyes, itching in the roof of the mouth, nose, and ears, hoarseness, and a tickling sensation in the throat. If left untreated for a long time, a pollen allergy can develop into allergic asthma; this is referred to as a “change in severity.” The diagnosis is made through a comprehensive medical consultation as well as skin and blood tests. Various medications in the form of nasal sprays, eye drops, or tablets/drops can be used to treat the symptoms of a pollen allergy. Complementary medical treatments have also proven effective.
These tips are also helpful:
- During pollen season, only air out the room briefly in short bursts
- Wear
sunglasses outdoors
- Wash your hair in the evening to minimize the amount of pollen that ends up in
bed
- Store the clothes you’ve worn
outside the bedroom
- Rinse your nose in the morning and evening with a seawater spray or saline solution
