Bitter Substances and Their Tea-Based Medicines

Bitter compounds are natural plant substances. They stimulate the digestive system, help reduce acidity, curb cravings, and much more. Bitter compounds are very effective, but unfortunately they are becoming increasingly rare in the modern diet.

In herbal medicine, plants containing bitter compounds are used in small amounts as part of a course of treatment for therapeutic purposes in the form of teas, fresh plant mixtures, or capsules.

The following plants rich in bitter compounds can be used to make tea:

  • Wormwood

  • Dandelion

  • Green tea

  • Yarrow…

In addition to plants rich in bitter compounds, there are also many foods that contain them:

  • Sugar loaf

  • Chicory

  • Endive

  • Arugula

  • Brussels sprouts

  • Olives

  • Grapefruit…

Bitter compounds are sensitive to heat, which can affect their bitterness. Therefore, they should be eaten raw or steamed only briefly.

To allow the bitter compounds to exert their positive effect on digestion, consume them before or after a meal: When taken 10 to 30 minutes before a meal, they optimally prepare the digestive system for food processing. After a meal, they help relieve bloating, gas, or stomach pain, so you quickly feel active again and less sluggish.

When the effects of the bitter compounds take effect varies greatly from person to person: Some people notice an improvement after the very first dose, for example, because they don’t feel bloated after eating or simply because they feel lighter and more alert. Others may not notice a change until after a few weeks of regular use—depending on the condition of their digestive system and the specific symptoms they’re experiencing.
