Dry skin
Do you suffer from dry, flaky skin in winter?
Our skin dries out more quickly during the cold season. However, cold, dry air is only one of many causes of dry skin. The dry air in heated rooms and the cold, dry air outside rob our skin of moisture. Dry skin is typically characterized by flaking, when the top layer of skin sloughs off slowly, causing an unpleasant feeling of tightness. Healthy, normal skin is soft and elastic thanks to its water content. The top layer of skin contains oils that reduce evaporation. This retains moisture in the deeper layers of the skin and protects the skin from water loss. If there is not enough oil, the skin dries out more quickly – especially in dry air, such as in winter or in cold regions.
In addition to the cold season, there are numerous other causes of dry skin. Age plays an important role: from the second half of life onwards, the moisture content of the skin decreases. Fat and sebum production gradually decreases and the skin retains less moisture.
If the skin is very dry, brittle, and flaky, this impairs its natural barrier function. This can lead to itchy inflammation and small cracks in the skin. Bacteria and viruses can multiply and penetrate the skin more easily. Examples include bacterial impetigo and viral warts. It is therefore important to take action at the first signs of dry skin.
Tips for prevention or treatment:
Do not shower or bathe for too long or at too high a temperature. Use a mild, pH-neutral soap that is gentle on the skin. The same applies to washing your hands. Cold or lukewarm water is sufficient.
After showering or washing your hands, you should use a moisturizing body lotion and face or hand cream. If you already suffer from dry skin, you should apply a moisturizing lotion two to three times a day. Studies show that applying lotion once a day has little effect on the skin. You have to be patient and apply lotion several times a day for three to four weeks.
Since the body transports fluid from the inside to the skin, it is important to drink enough. Especially in stressful times, drinking is often forgotten, and as we age, the feeling of thirst decreases, with the result that we tend to drink too little. You should make sure to drink about two liters of water or unsweetened tea every day.
