high blood pressure

High blood pressure is a widespread health problem in Switzerland. According to estimates, one in four adults in Switzerland has high blood pressure. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, refers to a condition in which the pressure of the blood against the walls of the blood vessels is elevated. High blood pressure can increase the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, kidney problems, and other conditions. Blood pressure is usually measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and consists of two numbers, systolic blood pressure (the higher number, which measures the pressure during contraction of the heart) and diastolic blood pressure (the lower number, which measures the pressure between contractions of the heart). Normal blood pressure is usually around 120/80 mmHg. A regular blood pressure reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is usually diagnosed as hypertension, or high blood pressure.
